Spring Classes - 7th-11 Grade - High School Prep

Introduction to VRC (First VEX Experience)

This is first of the two prerequisite classes to join our high school robotics competition teams.

First Vex Experience is a preparatory course for students moving up to a VEX Competition team. The course is required to join a competition team in the fall. Students will learn the basics of constructing a VEX Competition robot. They will work to construct a drive train, lift, and object manipulator using aluminum. Best practices of robot construction will be introduced.

While onsite, students will be cutting metal with drills, rotary tools, jigsaws, and band saws. This is a true lab and students will need to adhere to safety procedures/behavior. All power tool usage will be directly supervised by an adult.

If your student missed Introduction to C++ this winter, they must take Introduction to C++ this spring or during summer camp in order to join a competition team in the fall.

Fees for classes using metal robots are higher because metal will be cut and electronics break at a much higher rate than with the plastic VEX IQ robots

The nine week class will have no more than 14 students.

Intro to C++

Students begin working in C++, learn basic syntax, spacing and formatting, comments, embedded data types, conditional statements and how these relate to the robot. C++ is a textual language that has formed the base for some of the more common languages today such as java and is a great foundation for programmers. Then we move on to various loops and, finally, to functions, passing variables by value. By the end of this class students will know how to organize their code in industry standard formats paving their way to solve complex algorithms. Basic autonomous and drive control will be featured.
